NOTE ON THE BEST FOCUS IN THE PRESENCE OF SPHERICAL ABERRATION

ABSTRACT. The location of the best axial focus of an optical system in the presence of spherical aberrations of various orders is considered upon the criterion of maximum axial light intensity. Adhering to Rayleigh's quarter-wave-length limit, it is shown by approximate formulation that for axial aberrations sensible up to the primary, secondary and tertiary order, the allowable tolerance for such parts of the aberrations when stated in terms of optical path-difference can reach A, 4h, and 15h respectively, provided that the foci of various zones are suitably controlled in design.
