标题: Toppan Printing Develops Electronic Paper with High Resolution of 400ppi

June 7, 2004 (TOKYO) -- Toppan Printing Co, Ltd has developed electronic paper with a high resolution of 400 pixels per inch (ppi).

Toppan's e-paper
It is of 1-inch QVGA with 320 x 240 dots. According to the firm, this is currently the best resolution in the industry. The prototype Toppan Printing revealed employs electronic paper using an electrophoresis microcapsule method that has been co-developed with E Ink Corp of the United States. This electronic paper consists of a "front board" coated by microcapsules holding black and white inks, and a "back board" that is a driving electrode. Electronic paper, which Toppan and E ink have already launched for mass production for the "LIBRIe" electronic-book terminal designed by Sony Corp, uses amorphous silicon thin-film transistor (TFT) substrates for its back board. However, the companies successfully improved the new prototype's resolution by using Si substrates for the back board. As for the front board, they use the same one as the mass-produced E-papers. The prototype's structure appears to be similar to that of a liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCOS). Toppan Printing expects this electronic paper to be used for wearable devices and for cards to display information on it. "If required, we'll consider its commercialization as soon as possible," said a company official.
