i think your are not considering nonlinear effect limit but bulk damage or surface damage limit, right? If that's the case, at least you can easily estimate the fiber diameter theoretically.

The reason is that the head face of the fiber had been damaged after several laser pulses. The transmissivity of the laser pulse will drop from 80% to 5% even more less. So the test is fucked up.

sounds interesting. never played with such high energy pulses. Have u ever tried to check the fiber facet after each shot? See how the fiber facet changes after each shot and make sure there are no any dust particles on the fiber facet. A Protection cover might be helpful too? Or eventually use hermetic seal?
