Many companies use Aluminum Nitride(ALN) material to thermally dissipate heat out of the Laser. It is usually mounted on the TOP of the circuit. We put Gold Tin(Au/Sn) on the circuit so all they have to do is heat up the part up to 280C and the Au/Sn will flow and attach the component that they mount on our substrate. Usually an operator will put an Au/Sn preform on the circuit and manually put the Laser on the substrate and attach with this method. This has a high labor content.
With the Au/Sn already on the substrate all they have to do is us a pick and place machine in place and they can automate this!
