At present high-power laser diodes are pushing laser technology forward to new state-of-the-art in modern industry. They become the key devices for laser systems used in material processing, pumping for solid-state lasers and medical applications.In the early 1990s, the LD bars,of which the power and life time reached more than 20 W and 10000 h, opened up potential for volume applications.The process was achieved mainly by substantial improvements of the GaAs crystal-growth technology, supplying subatrates of low defect density as well as in the epitaxial growth process of AlGaInAs and GaInAsP layers on GaAs.
The adavantage of laser systems based on high-power laser diodes are compared to lamp pumping or gas discharge for generating coherent light, are smaller size, the higher electrical-to-optical convension effiency, the simple power and cooling supply, and the higher reliability.1. high-power LDs are likely replace the lamps in sold-state laser systems. 2. Many high-powe LDs can be easily assembled to get the desired output power of direct-diode application.3. In applications demanding higher beam quality, replacement of solid-state laser systems by sophisticated high-power LD stacks is envaged. |
