Samsung Electronics Develops High Definition LCD , 03.21.05, 12:01 PM ET Asia Pulse Pte Ltd SEOUL, March 21 Asia Pulse - Samsung Electronics Co. (KSE:005930) said Sunday that it has developed a new high definition liquid crystal display (LCD) that can give clearer picture resolution regardless of surrounding conditions. South Korea's leading consumer electronics giant said the new product makes use of patterned vertical alignment technology that not only provides clarity under sunlight but permits the user to see the screen at an almost all angle. Existing LCD do not provide good resolution when used outdoors under sunny conditions, while viewing the screen from a steep angle is impossible. The company said the screen can be seen clearly within 160 degrees of the viewing angle from all directions. Current LCDs on the market cannot be seen beyond a viewing angle of 100 degrees left or right from the screen, and 80 degrees above and below it. Samsung said that when the LCDs are used on mobile phones that can pick up digital multimedia broadcasting, several people will be able to watch the contents at once. The company said that mass production of the screen will take place in 2006 with the first screens being used by upper-end mobile phones. This will be followed by applications in portable media players and car navigation systems along with other medium- sized mobile audio and video appliances, it said.
