Optimising Pulse Shapes for Optical Communication Systems
The bit error rate (BER) performance of all communication systems is an extremely important measure of the success, or otherwise, of information transmission. Many factors influence the BER, including pulse dispersion, crosstalk form other channels and thermal noise.
Most currently installed optical systems use on-off keying (OOK) and nonreturn-to zero (NRZ) pulses. In recent years return-to-zero (RZ) pulses have been shown to provide superior BER performance for optically preamplified receivers This project entails the use of MATLAB to implement optical communication system models and study the impact of pulse width on the BER. Ideally, it will be possible to extend the analysis beyond the Gaussian approximation (often used in the literature) to obtain realistic results.
